Oxygen System - How It Works
Oxygen System
The FishPac™ system must use aluminium oxygen cylinders, and the maximum size is 1,012mm high x 215 mm diameter. The water capacity of the cylinder is 23.8 – 24.3 litres, and 4,100 litres of oxygen at 16.3MPa. The oxygen flows from the cylinder through a purpose designed, patented and approved regulator at approximately 3 litres per minute. The oxygen is dispersed into the bin/tote via a ceramic diffuser. The regulator can only be leased as it is an ICAO/IATA regulation that the regulator is exchanged and serviced every 6 months by FishPac™. The fish/fingerlings can be sustained for 25+ hours.
Bins/Totes
The bins/totes are a rotomoulded food safe type and manufactured to FishPac™’s design. The FishPac™ bin/tote is approved by aviation authorities. The bin/tote is approximately 1.65 cubic metres in size, 1 metre high x 1.3 metres deep x 1 metre long. The live fish capacity is approximately 360kg (800lb) in approximately 550 litres (140 gallons) of water. When full, the bin/tote weighs approximately 990kg (2150lb). The bins/totes are designed to fit aircraft Unit Loading Devices (ULDs), ie ULDs such as AKE container – 1 bin/tote, DQF & PLA container – 2 bins/totes and PMC - 3 or 4 bins/totes. Only wide bodied passenger aircraft or purpose designed cargo aircraft are suitable for the FishPac™ bins/totes. ONLY THE FISHPAC DESIGNED & APPROVED BINS/TOTES CAN BE USED WITH THE FISHPAC SYSTEM.
Fish Preparation
Live fish are normally held in filtered tanks and purged (starved) for 24-48 hours prior to packing into bins. The quality of the fish and water are critical to successful shipments. Fish are normally graded and prepared for packing into FishPac™ bins/totes the day before shipment. The amount of fish shipped depends on species, size and total shipping time, ie time from when the FishPac bin/tote is packed, transported to the airport of departure, flight time and transport time to final destination. FishPac™ will assist in evaluating the volume of fish/fingerlings to be shipped.
Fish size and weight
Depending on the species, FishPac™ has successfully shipped or tested fingerlings and fish up to a weight of 20kg (40lb).
Mortality
The FishPac™ oxygen system averages less than 1% mortality when used in accordance with FishPac™ operating instructions. Conditions apply.
